To anyone reading this post as their introduction to me, hi! As of present writing, I am a Ph.D. candidate in Mathematics at the University of Pittsburgh.

Why Make a Math Blog?

I have loved math all my life, in part because it gives me a set of tools to play with and to explore the world around me. Sometimes, it even helps me develop strategies improve my life. I have also been teaching for a long time, and have quite enjoyed sharing what I know with others. However, the Calculus curriculum I have been responbile for teaching at Pitt only leaves so much room for the interesting math I encounter in my daily life.

I have found some outlets for sharing these ideas—my YouTube channel being one of them—but not everything I encounter lends itself well to a video presentation. So, this website will have some written posts to fill the gap.

To any students reading this: I consider this blog (and others like it) to be what math is all about! Your professors may have made incredible, award-winning discoveries that advance their field. Perhaps by the time you’re reading this, I’ll be one of them. But, in my opinion, the main difference between those award-winning discoveries and blogs like this one is the audience that cares about it. I believe that math is for everyone, and one of my objectives in teaching you is for you to bring math into the spaces you care about. This blog is a written record of me doing the same thing!

You never know when inspiration will strike (or when you’ll have the time to write), so I have no set schedule for this. But, now that I’ve done the minimum possible something, I can get started.
